Earplugs are becoming an increasingly common and popular sound solution for both sports and regular commuting or walking in the fresh air. Company Lg back in June introduced two pairs of wireless headphones LG TONE Free: HBS–FN6 and HBS–FN4… The older model has reached us, which we will talk about in detail today.
APPEARANCE AND PACKAGING
The earbuds come in a neat white box that opens like modern phones – by slowly sliding down the bottom platform. Inside there is a round-shaped charging case, a USB-A to Type-C cord, instructions in several languages and a set of additional silicone ear pads in two sizes. The price for LG TONE HBS-FN6 is 9990 rubles at the time of this writing.
GENERAL FEELING AND WORK
Outwardly, LG’s solution is very similar to the Pro version of Apple’s AirPods, but there are differences in capabilities. For example, LG TONE Free FN6 does not support the noise canceling function. Plus, these earbuds have an IPX4 rated dust and water resistance, which means they won’t be suitable for swimming or may fail if exposed to heavy rain. But they can survive a light drizzle and active exercise in the gym with sweat. However, I would not recommend testing the latter.
On the other hand, the charging case offers an innovative UV treatment that can kill up to 99.9% of bacteria in ten minutes. Although what is the practical application is not very clear, since bacteria usually do not enter the body through the ears. The only option is if you keep your headphones in your teeth while answering an urgent call, but this is just some wild exception to the rule.
On the front of the charging case, there is a small LED-backlight that signals the remaining charge and the need to recharge.
The headphones themselves work without recharging for 6 hours and the case promises another 12 hours of charge. 18 hours is normal, although competitors also have more serious solutions.
LG TONE Free FN6 pair easily with gadgets on iOS or Android via Bluetooth 5.0. Each earbud is lighter than its Apple counterpart and the glossy finish leaves a pleasant tactile feel. You can choose the best pair of ear cushions available for you.
The headphones fit comfortably in the ear and do not fall out during active movements and exertion, which is incredibly important.
The HBS-FN6 have touch controls along the base of the earphone. You can use it to start, change tracks and stop music, raise and lower the volume, and answer incoming calls. In addition, the earbuds have an Ambient Sound mode that lets the sounds around you pass through, allowing you to quickly respond to the situation on the street or respond to people around you.
SOUND AND MICROPHONE
Time for real tests. Since we have a Russian winter outside our window, minus 12 and it is snowing, we decided to test the HBS-FN6 in a harsh natural environment. I went outside in a woolen hat – some of the headphones were sticking out. During an hour’s walk for four kilometers, they did not freeze, did not discharge themselves and worked quite actively in the mode of playing music and telephone conversations. We will talk about music a little below, since I did not notice the difference in sounding on the street and at home. But phone calls on the street and especially with headphones almost closed with a cap in the cold are quite an extreme solution. During the conversation, I clearly heard the interlocutor without distortion. The interlocutors complained about a slight noise (apparently from the friction of the cap) and a booming sound. There was no noise in the room, but the boom remained.
I tried changing the modes, but the resonance for the interlocutor during telephone conversations did not disappear.
We tried the HBS-FN6 on a number of tracks and the end result is mixed. Classics with one or two instruments in the middle frequencies are reproduced quite brightly and richly, however, in orchestral melodies, the high frequencies sound harsh and distorted, and the bass starts to muddy. At the same time, pop songs, for example from Shawn Mendes or Taylor Swift, are perfectly perceived. Once you switch to something more complicated, the sound jumble begins.
CONCLUSIONS
Cleaning the earbuds from bacteria, a nicely shaped case, ease of use, working outdoors and even 18 hours with a charge case are the undoubted advantages of this solution from LG. Of course, I would like to get a higher level of protection against moisture and dust and noise reduction. Well, the treble and bass causes general chagrin. However, if you listen to popular music while jogging, shoveling snow trenches or exercising in the gym, and also dream of getting a headset for communication as a bonus and don’t want to spend money on fashionable solutions for 25 thousand rubles, then the HBS-FN6 will definitely suit you. Otherwise, just take a look at the more expensive models.
