IGN Hit Digital Foundry: Gears 5 Resolution On Xbox Series X Difficult To Determine Due To VRS

Portal IGN published a new video dedicated to Gears 5 on the next generation console Xbox series x… And it became a kind of blow to journalists Digital foundrywho specialize in analyzing the performance of games on various computers and consoles.

Earlier on the DF channel, a video on Gears 5 was also published. It said that the minimum resolution on the Xbox Series X drops to 1080p, and on the Xbox Series S – to 720. This provoked a scandal, since the journalists did not test the game at all on the junior Microsoft console, which was not available for testing (the developers themselves said that they were targeting 1440p, and the portal’s editors began to build theories).

IGN representatives were able to communicate directly with the studio staff. The coalition… From the interview, it becomes clear that the editors of Digital Foundry misinterpreted the numbers. Technology is to blame Variable-Rate Shading (VRS). We are talking about shading optimization, which allows you to save resources with minimal loss in image quality.

On Xbox Series X in the single player campaign, Gears 5 has a steady 60 frames per second. But the picture quality is extremely interesting. First, resolution scaling is used, which changes every four frames. One of three profiles (2160p / 1700p / 1440p) is selected depending on the load.

Next comes the VRS. The technology works as follows: only the part of the image that the player sees is rendered at full resolution. For example, character models in the foreground. But the high detail blurred due to the depth effect of the backdrop is a waste of resources. Therefore, it can be rendered at a lower resolution.

This also applies to other small details (dark places, distant objects, and so on). Due to this, resources can be greatly saved (5-12% and even higher). But pinpointing the exact resolution in Gears 5 becomes very difficult.
