Saying goodbye to heritage Marvel, company Netflix continues to explore superhero themes. Having bought back in 2018 the rights to film adaptation of graphic work Warrior Nun Areala Ben Dunn, the Americans decided to leave the plot basis about the chosen warrior of light against the forces of darkness, moving the scene to the vastness of modern Spain. As a result, the television adaptation was commissioned Simon Barrywho worked on “Van Helsing“And”The continuum”, And the script for several episodes was prepared by the official voice of Solid Snake – David Hayter…
“Warrior nun”Talks about the paralytic girl Ava, played by the Portuguese-Brazilian actress Alba Baptista… Having died as a result of unexplained circumstances, she returns to the world of the living, already the owner of an angelic halo. Endowed with divine superpower and regeneration, the heroine does not really want to be a member of the Christian sect of warrior nuns for most of the 10 episodes of the first season, fleeing her noble duties. However, her true mission and source of power will only be revealed in the later episodes of the season.
Although Netflix closely follows the SJW agenda, there are no too fanciful manifestos or annoyingly tolerant insertions. Yes, there are Asians and blacks among the nuns, and there is even a half-hinted lesbian line, but this is rather a background that does not affect the presentation or development of the plot. The Catholic Church looks quite neutral until the final plot twist, and negative female characters noticeably take away screen time from usually guilty white men.
The story develops rather slowly, but watching the adventures of the main character with nightclubs, parties and demons is really fascinating. And even predictable plot moves are not annoying. At the same time, the authors demonstrate in great detail the bewitching spirit of beauty of modern and old Spain, from the resort of Marbella to Malaga and Seville. Battles with demons and hand-to-hand fights come through with a budget, but this is more than acceptable against the backdrop of an interesting plot and magnificent views of Andalusia.
The very history of the Order of the Cross Sword is borrowed from the original graphic work, but everything else is based on a completely new plot. Considering the final episode, in the second season, the authors will have significantly more action and points for interaction between the heroes. Well, Ava herself should become the center of the revived order.
In addition to the main character, in the story, a significant part of the screen time is devoted to her love interest, Ji C (Emilio Osorio), but most of the scenes are pulled out by black sister Maria (Toya Turner), cleverly handling two shotguns, and Lilith’s cold sister performed by Lorena Andrea… And this on-screen duo deserves much more attention than the main character suffering from doubts and love.
Sure, “Warrior nun”, With emotional throwing and love experiences, it focuses more on the female audience, but the male half also has something to see here, except for the cute Baptista. The plot offers some unexpected twists and turns, and the finale leaves only the most pleasant expectations. Given the fact that this series hit the top of the best Netflix premieres, the second season should be expected in exactly one year, unless, of course, the coronavirus ruins all plans again.
