Google Chrome negatively affects CPU performance in Windows 10 - review

We already wrote that in the May update of Windows 10, Segment Heap technology appeared, which was supposed to reduce the memory consumption of the web browser. It was a question of reducing consumption by up to 27% for Win32 applications. However, it is now reported that in the Chrome browser, improved memory performance adversely affects processor utilization.

In numbers, we are talking about increasing consumption by 10-13%. This was determined by the experts of the Chromium development team, and also confirmed in Microsoft. They started tracking the error at the beginning of this month, and now they decided to disable the Segment Heap function in the browser by default.

As noted, on a test platform with Chrome beta 84.0.4147.85 and the latest build of Windows 10 (19041.329), CPU load increased by an average of 9.3%. With more processor power, this figure may increase further.

The search giant is currently planning to track telemetry data from Chrome versions 84 and 85, running on the latest builds of Windows 10, as well as version 85 on older versions of the system. This will help to understand the cause of the defect and eliminate it.

At the same time, we note that similar problems are not reported in Microsoft Edge.
