The source code of the console leaked to the network Xbox first generation along with the source code for the nearly final version Windows NT 3.5reports The verge. According to the publication, the leak is really real and occurred in early May.
Information about the kernel of the console operating system, which in itself is a modified version of Windows 2000, has become public. The leaked package also contains some build environments, a set of development tools used for testing emulators and internal Microsoft documentation. At the same time, as The Verge notes, the Xbox source code was available to enthusiasts before, but was distributed privately.
Now, when all the important data has appeared in the public domain, this can have far-reaching consequences, in particular, for the development of the emulator scene. Due to the specifics of the Xbox core, no one still succeeded in fully simulating the console – all unofficial emulators created by the community today can only reproduce with a creak about 40 of 900 games available on the original Xbox. At the same time, Microsoft has its own proprietary Xbox and Xbox 360 emulation system, but it is only available on Xbox One.
In a statement to The Verge, a Microsoft spokesman said that the company is aware of the leak and is investigating what happened.
Xbox came out in 2001. Now the fourth generation of the Xbox Series X console is preparing for launch.
