Russian film studio “Soyuzmultfilm“Intends to return the rights to use the image of Cheburashka transferred to Japan 16 years ago. Chairman of the Board Juliana Slashcheva considers them invalid. Until 2023, they belong to the company. SP International, however, the parties disagreed on the duration and terms of the contract.
According to Slashcheva, it was drafted according to Japanese law, and all proceedings, including litigation, must take place in this country, which will require large financial costs.
“I think that another solution could be the removal of the issue of the return of rights to Cheburashka to the state and intergovernmental levels. In any case, in the near future we intend to seriously address the issue of the return of rights, ”said Slashcheva.
The Chairman noted that since 2017, Soyuzmultfilm has returned more than 90% of the rights to use audiovisual images and cartoons to its “golden collection”, which includes Prostokvashino, “Well, wait a minute!”, “Winnie the Pooh” and others.
As for the recently released short CG-movie, the last Slashcheva did not like.
“If we evaluate the performance of our heroes in 3D technology, then I basically feel good about it, but I did not like the quality of how the Japanese did it in the new episode. And I am very sorry that they believe that they have the right to film adaptation! ” – said Slashcheva.
In 2009, the Japanese television channel Tokyo TV released a 26-episode animated series about the adventures of Cheburashka, at the end of which the premiere of a full-length film took place. The short output was timed to coincide with his tenth anniversary.
