5 tips for a gamer not to be mistaken when choosing a university

An admission campaign for applicants has started in Russian universities – a difficult quest to get into student life. Usually applicants choose a place of study in advance, but sometimes it turns out that school graduates are not completely sure of their choice. In this case, they can apply to several educational institutions at once.

For gamers and e-sportsmen, the issue of education often becomes a hot topic: combining study and a favorite hobby, which can turn into a real career, is really not easy. Fortunately, times are changing and many top universities now support students’ hobbies: they themselves conduct and participate in competitions, and also teach courses in their specialty. Cybersport.ru together with the Institute of Industry Management of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) explains, using simple examples, how gamers should not be mistaken when choosing a university.

Put knowledge into practice

Every gamer knows how important practice and training are. You can watch others play indefinitely, but until you pick up a mouse or a gamepad yourself, you will definitely not learn how to play well. Choose the university where during the training the emphasis is placed on the applied use of the acquired skills and the demand for these skills in the labor market. Nowadays the requirements for specialists are changing faster than the meta in Dota 2, so be careful.

Good universities already from the first years acquaint their students with the chosen specialty, be it a business structure or some kind of production. Firstly, you will quickly understand the nuances of future work, and secondly, you will understand earlier how much you are really interested in the chosen direction. In advance, pay attention to the teachers and lecturers of the university. It is good if these are practitioners who will share personal knowledge and experience with you, and not theorists with abstracts from the manuals.

IOM is the only practice-oriented institute of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, whose teachers share knowledge based on personal experience in business – master classes are conducted by specialists from Coca-Cola, Nestle, L’Oreal, EY, Mail.ru Group and other companies. Practical training begins in the first year, and in the third year, about 80% of students begin to work fully. The best students will be able to undergo an internship in leading Russian and foreign organizations and departments: Rosatom, Lukoil, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Sibur, Bosch, the Moscow government, etc.

Bet on a foreign language

Now to know at least one foreign language, at least English, is not an achievement, but a necessity for any top specialist. Find out in advance if the university can offer training in English, whether you will study business vocabulary and what certificates you can get during your studies. It’s good if there are additional foreign languages to choose from – they will definitely come in handy (maybe you will begin to understand what the Poles are telling you in CS: GO).

In the process of studying, you can change your mind and choose a completely different profile, but knowledge of a foreign language will always be relevant. This skill scales your opportunities both in the gaming industry and in everyday life, regardless of the chosen specialty. For example, an esports player who is fluent in English can: a) play for an international team; b) work with foreign sponsors; c) communicate and keep in touch with fans from overseas. Needless to say, he has many more career options than competitors without this skill?

IOM offers an in-depth study of the English language, in addition, while studying, you can prepare for the IELTS certificate exam for free. Some subjects are taught in English – for example, Cross-cultural Marketing, Digital Marketing and others. Starting from the second year of study, you can choose an additional foreign language: Italian, Spanish, French, German or even Chinese.

Strive to gain international experience

Some Russian universities participate in international student exchange programs. Pay attention to this practice because it can give you an invaluable career boost. Going abroad for one or two years and getting an education abroad is an important life experience to grasp. You will not only get to know the culture and mentality of other people better, but also get the opportunity to meet foreign specialists from your field, make important contacts and acquaintances that will help build a career in the future.

If you look at the esports scene now, it’s easy to see that this is a very multinational industry. Representatives of different countries and cultures often perform in the same clubs. To work comfortably in this environment or to effectively manage such personnel, it is precisely international experience that is needed. Some of the current leaders from the CIS (for example, HellRaisers CEO Alexey Magician Slabukhin) have been trained and received specialized skills abroad. Now people with such experience find it easier to find a job (and teammates!).

IOM students can study international exchange programs at universities in Italy, the Netherlands, Croatia, Slovakia and Serbia. Every year, the institute hosts a student scientific and practical conference with foreign speakers. Among the speakers are top managers and executives of Philips, Senteo Inc., Atos and other companies.

Combine hobbies and education

If you are a gamer and a fan of esports, then it is logical to pay attention to those universities that will support your hobby. Every year there are more and more educational institutions, in the educational program of which there are e-sports courses, as well as lectures and master classes from professional players and industry representatives. Many universities hold tournaments among their students, and the best ones send teams to all-Russian competitions.

Gradually, esports is becoming the same part of everyday student life as KVN or the Universiade. If a university does not attach importance to this trend and does not adapt to the interests of its students, then it is worth considering whether it is keeping up with the times in other educational issues. Perhaps studying there will be uncomfortable and uninteresting for you, and if you catch a tilt, you will have to write “GG” and start your studies anew.

RANEPA actively supports esports, holds round tables and master classes with guests from the industry, as well as academic tournaments among students. And esports is officially taught here as an additional educational program.
