The story of Larry’s adventures is one of the oldest adventures that have passed through periods of ups and downs and have survived to this day. In this particular case, thanks to the efforts of a German company CrazyBunch… And if in 2018 she tried to imagine how a guy from the distant 80s would look in the modern world of tolerance and new technologies, then in continuation – Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Dry Twice – the developers are going into the fray in an attempt to surpass the Saints Row series.
The new game continues the story of the previous one, but it is not at all necessary to go through the first part to immerse yourself in the plot. The events unfold in the vast Mexican village of Cancam, where Larry must marry the most beautiful girl, but his fantasies are still associated with the bitchy Faith Less, who disappeared somewhere in the depths of the ocean. A sudden message forces the hero to throw away all conventions and go on a mad, dangerous adventure in search of his only lover. Ahead of him are battles with North Korean spies, tribes of cannibals and a group of geeks dreaming of the greatest role-playing game in the world.
As in the last part, Larry is true to himself. You can click on the button and see all the active items on the screen, which he collects or tries to combine to get an unexpected result. At the same time, there is logic in the actions of the character, so you do not have to connect all objects in a row in search of the ideal option.
The navigation system has changed. Larry can instantly move between screens by double-clicking a controller button or clicking on the mouse, and between large locations they allow you to move through the active map on a makeshift raft. Another innovation is crafting. The AI hero’s phone, PayPhone, not only gives valuable advice, argues and teases Larry, but can also offer blueprints for unusual devices – from a homemade raft to a spiritual out-of-body system. Naturally, you will have to look for all the components for these inventions yourself. But Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Dry Twice is very loyal to the player – besides the ability to highlight all active items on the screen, there is an electronic to-do list from which you can learn about current tasks.
Like the previous part, Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Dry Twice actively exploits the topic of sex and vulgar humor. Members and vaginas stick out from every screen, from the corporation building to the submarine or mechanism in the secret cave of cosmic knowledge. The authors offer riddles where you need to dress up a drunken pig in the costume of a stoned masochist, or, using sex toys, find out the password for the safe. Dildos, liters of lubricant and giant islands in the form of reproductive organs will haunt you for 15 hours of measured narration. At the same time, some jokes may seem silly, while others will cause a smile or turn out to be quite appropriate. Indeed, in addition to a large layer of sex, the game actively makes fun of bloggers, modern corporate culture and many other phenomena.
An unconditional and slightly annoying companion of Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Dry Twice is backtracking. The authors quite actively drive the character between the islands, while you cannot capture all the necessary components in one go. Very often, new items appear according to a script or after a conversation with one of the NPCs, which is perceived as an undoubted minus for modern games.
Visually, the sequel has no changes. The environment is still well-drawn, the number of animations and intros are minimal, and the last levels stylized as the original from the 80s can bring a smile or a fit of nostalgia.
