Xbox Game Pass Gives Microsoft More Options To Reboot Old Franchises

As part of the latest Kinda Funny Gamescast, Phil Spencer explains how Game Pass has influenced development Fable from Playground Games, Battletoads from Dlala Studios, Perfect Dark from The Initiative and other sequels of the “abandoned” franchises.

The head of the Xbox noted that the ability to track the popularity of old games made it easier to get approval for new projects.

“Take Prey, which I thought was an amazing game when it came out, but a lot of people missed it. Seeing more and more people playing it and Dishonored or returning to Fable, talking about all these games, we, as a creative organization, collect more data about what users are interested in, and figure out what things we can revive, fill with new ideas and find new teams that might want to do it. “

“Game Pass is definitely a great source. When we got Bethesda, we were able to add so many ‘old new’ games to the subscription and return to the legacy we have. “

Thinking back to the Rare Replay compilation, Spencer calls it “a really cool thing that allowed people to play some of the old IPs.”

According to the head of Xbox, Game Pass not only provides games as a service, but also offers to play your favorite projects, games that are simply “there” and people like.

In his tenure, Spencer has given the green light to sequels to a series of forgotten franchises. For example, Flight Simulator recently came out from the pen of the gaming division of Microsoft, which has won acclaim from critics and gamers.

As for the aforementioned Rare Replay, when asked if the company wants to release a similar collection from another internal Microsoft studio, Spencer immediately expressed a desire to re-release the games of the now-closed FASA Interactive.

“This is not a preview of what we’re going to release, but when I think of the work that Jordan Weisman has done when I think of Shadowrun, Crimson [Skies], Mech [Warrior]… what fantastic, deep stories and worlds there are ”.

“There are some issues with the rights to these things, but if you ask me if there was a studio in our Fortfolios that I would like to open the catalog and let more people play, FASA is definitely at the top of the list.”
