Wingsuit will not be available to everyone: DICE spoke about specialists, maps, crossplay and testing Battlefield 2042

A month after the announcement Battlefield 2042 studio developers DICE decided to tell more about the game. They collected the most popular comments and posed questions to the senior design director Daniel Berlin… The material turned out to be quite voluminous, read the main points from it below.

Specialists

  • By the time the game launches, 10 Specialists will be available – a new type of soldier that replaces the traditional Battlefield classes. Each of them will receive a unique talent and specialization, as well as fully customizable equipment. The latter cannot be changed. For example, the specialist controlling the wingsuit is unique and cannot be used by other classes.
  • Specialist Falk will have the “Military Surgeon” talent. It allows you to revive allies with full health. In Battlefield 2042, the Squad Rescue feature will return as a talent, which takes more time and does not fully restore players’ health.

  • Each specialist is not limited in the choice of equipment. You can choose: main weapon, equipment (medical box or ammunition box), auxiliary weapon (pistol), throwing weapon (fragmentation or incendiary grenade).
  • A squad in Battlefield 2042 can have a maximum of four players. Moreover, in the “Capture” and “Breakthrough” modes, several identical specialists can be present in it. Allies can be distinguished by blue icons, and squad members by green icons.
  • Specialists can customize their appearance, so that two identical specialists will look completely different.
  • Ranger is not a Specialist Unique Ability. Any player can summon the robot as support. The number of available Rangers will be limited.

Cards

  • 7 new All-Out Warfare maps will be available at release in Battlefield 2042.
  • Two significant changes have been made to the Conquest mode: clustering, designed to divide the map into free zones of activity and zones for capture, for which you will need to fight with other players, and sectors that change the process of capturing territories. The bottom line is that the team must capture and maintain control of all flags in the sector, otherwise it will be considered neutral territory.
  • Different game modes will involve different areas of the maps. For example, in the “Conquest” mode, you will not be able to fight where it is allowed in the “Breakout” mode, and vice versa.
  • The main difference between maps for different generations of consoles is the size of the zones. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will have the same weapons, equipment, specialists and devices, as well as dynamic weather events (tornadoes) or dangerous natural disasters (electromagnetic storms).
  • When fighting in skyscrapers, not all floors will be available. The battles can be fought in the lobby and on the roof, which is easy to reach by elevator or zipline. A full-fledged skyscraper would have to be taken out on a separate map.
  • The developers have expanded the airspace, and thanks to the increase in scale, players will be able to run or drive much longer before receiving a warning about leaving the map.
  • New cards will be added after the game is released.

Technics

  • The character can still appear on the map inside the vehicle.
  • You can call the car through the tablet interface anywhere on the map. System usage depends on the map and game mode, and is also limited by the number of points assigned to the team.
  • Each faction will have its own types of equipment. For example, the Band of the Restless will join forces with Russia or the United States, depending on location. In the first case, it will be possible to use the T28 tank, in the second – the M1A5.
  • Helicopter MD540 Nightbird or heavy EBAA Wildcat will be available to all players.
  • LCAA Hovercraft will appear among the naval equipment in the game, although there will be no naval battles in Battlefield 2042.

Bots

  • AI-controlled fighters will appear in three different modes: multiplayer (to fill the servers and make it easier to match when searching for games), co-op and single-player (for battling bots alone or with friends).
  • There are no specialists among the bots, they cannot use talents and specializations, but they can summon vehicles, control them and capture targets. The fighters are trained enough to engage in firefights, flank, throw a grenade, and even revive a slain comrade.
  • The number of bots in multiplayer matches can be limited. The number of real players will always be higher, except for cases when the lobby is still full or almost empty.
  • Battlefield 2042 works only online and requires a constant connection to the network; you cannot play exclusively with bots in multiplayer matches.

Crossplay and progression

  • Thanks to the cross-platform play feature, PC users, Xbox Series X | S and PlayStation 5 consoles can fight together. Cross-platform play can be disabled in the settings. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners can only play with each other.
  • Battlefield 2042 will feature cross-platform progress and general purchases. The latter will be available at any time on all platforms.

Testing

  • Developers want to test the quality of cross-platform play on PC, Xbox Series X | S and PlayStation 5, therefore we decided to postpone testing Battlefield 2042 until later summer
  • DICE will recruit a small group on its own, you don’t need to do anything. To take part in the selection, it is recommended to update the EA Playtesting profile, although registration does not guarantee access to testing.

Battlefield 2042 is slated for release on October 22, 2023. New details about the game are promised to be revealed in a week at EA Play 2023.
