US Army to arm with military version of HoloLens headset – Microsoft wins multi-billion dollar contract

Company Microsoft won a multi-billion dollar tender to supply the US Army with augmented reality headsets at the base HoloLens… According to CNBC, the contract is for 10 years and implies the supply of about 120,000 devices. The transaction value is estimated at $ 21.88 billion

The software giant has partnered with the US Army since 2018, whose soldiers have been testing prototype headsets with an integrated visual augmentation system (IVAS) for the past two years. These devices combine night vision sensors and a high-resolution thermal imager, as well as sensors responsible for displaying soldiers on a head-up display.

“The system uses augmented reality and machine learning to create a realistic mixed reality training environment for CCF forces to practice. [свои действия] before engaging in battle with any opponents, “the US Army said in a statement.

In February, the U.S. Army showed how a new and more durable version of the headset will allow armored vehicle operators to see through walls, for example, directly from a Bradley combat vehicle. An early prototype of the device was criticized for the poor performance of sensors and GPS, but now you can see that the design of the helmet has changed quite a lot.

Left – old version, right – new:

Microsoft originally won a $ 479 million contract to supply the U.S. Army with augmented reality headsets back in 2018. The move was met with criticism from a group of company employees, forcing the CEO Satya Nadella make a statement. However, Microsoft has continued to work with the US Department of Defense on a new version of the military helmet.

In the meantime, the civilian version of HoloLens hasn’t seen noticeable changes in hardware since the release of the second model in 2019. Instead, Microsoft is gradually tweaking the headset software along with better gesture support. For example, HoloLens 2 recently added Microsoft Mesh – a new mixed reality platform with “holoporting”, which allows people from different continents to see each other in a common virtual space, as if they are in the same room.
