Director of the mini-series “ChernobylJohan Renck refused to work on a new project HBO – adaptation of the game The last of us (“One of us“). This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter

The executive producer and screenwriter of the new series is Craig Mazin, who produced “Chernobyl”. He hoped to work with Renck again, but the latter had a conflict in the schedule.

However, they quickly found a replacement … in Russia. The new director of The Last of Us was Kantemir Balagovmade famous by the film “Dylda“(Beanpole). As a result, he received the award for the best director in the programSpecial look“and the prize International Film Press Federation on Cannes Film Festival in 2019.

“Dylda” was also nominated by Russia for the prize “Oscar” in the nomination “Best International Feature Film“, but in the end the tape did not make it to the shortlist.

It is Balagov who will direct the pilot episode of The Last of Us. The collaboration with him suggests that HBO executives are interested in the serious dramatic tone of adapting the game from Naughty dog

Update. Co-President of Naughty Dog Neil Druckmann, who also helps to produce The Last of Us series, commented personnel changes. He called Kantemir Balagov “a brilliant director” who shares a love of Joel and Ellie’s adventures.
