The designer reproduced his apartment in virtual reality – review

One of the problems of modern virtual reality systems is that they do not display real objects in the game.

Simply put, you can fight with zombies or aliens, but the illusion instantly collapses if the gamer goes beyond the safe zone and stumbles upon a sofa.

Greg Madison, designer from Spatial computing, published a video that shows a virtual model of his apartment. The most interesting thing is that it is fully consistent with the real room with all objects, furniture and so on.

It took Madison over 22 hours to model an apartment in Sketchup and Blender. The engine was used to start Unity. The author notes that the most difficult was the implementation of the changes, however, as a result, the dimensional accuracy of real and virtual objects differs by no more than 2 mm. He also called the feeling of a walk through the virtual space “amazing.”

It is noted that the project is intended to test ideas on how to use the real world space in VR applications. Of course, so far there are no technologies that can “digitize” the world in real time. However, in the future their appearance is not excluded.
