Sony patented spoiler blocking system against leaks on The Last of Us: Part II

The first details about the “cross-platform spoiler blocking service” invented by the network Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), which is especially true against the background of the emergence of mass leaks The Last of Us: Part II.

Initially, the company filed a patent for the technology in October 2018, and now it has again sent an application. The document, sent to the US Patent Commission, describes several “computer-implemented systems and methods for cross-platform spoiler blocking.”

The system itself is able to recognize which in-game objects (including activities, characters or weapons) the players have already seen, and then block their access to content (for example, user-created content, trophies or screenshots) containing potential spoilers.

In simple terms, the system will be similar to hidden trophies that are not shown to users for the time being in order to avoid spoilers.

“Game developers using the appropriate tools will be able to mark certain game objects as“ hidden ”, and the details of these objects will be hidden from the players until they themselves find them in the game. As in the case of hidden trophies, players will have the opportunity to prematurely open the spoiler if they so wish, ”the document says.

The technology also “allows players to interact with friends and the storytelling community with the confidence that they will not accidentally see spoilers.”

Sony believes that the negative impact of spoilers can reduce the enjoyment of the game and even cause the user to lose interest in it.

“Avoiding spoilers is a top priority for storytelling players. Spoilers can prevent them from actively participating in the development of the gaming community until they complete the game, which greatly limits their level of interaction with this community. ”

“In addition, the fear of spoilers can prevent players from participating in the formation of healthy communication, which can lead to a significant decrease in the interest of these users in the gaming platform.”

It should be understood that such a spoiler blocking system will be able to work primarily within the Sony ecosystem. In the vastness, for example, YouTube and the independent gaming sites that you visit from your PC and mobile devices, she, of course, will not be able to protect you.

The publisher seriously took up the blocking of spoilers after the plot of the upcoming exclusive PlayStation 4 – The Last of Us: Part II began to flow into the network.
