Sony for the environment – PlayStation 5 boxes are almost free of plastic and completely recyclable

Over the past 50 years, the use of plastic around the world has increased by about twenty times, but the recycling rate remains low at about 9%. In order to reduce the harmful impact on the environment, the corporation Sony developed a plan in 2023 Green Management 2025 and launched the project One blue ocean, in which the company pledged to completely eliminate the use of plastic in new packaging for its small products by 2025 and reduce the amount of plastic in packaging for other products by up to 10%.

It turned out that released in November Playstation 5 already meets these standards… Materials used to make boxes for the new console and accessories for it, completely recyclable and almost free of plastic – depending on the product, the amount ranges from one before 7%… To achieve this, the following changes have been made:

  • Rejection of trays made of expanded polystyrene or plastic in favor of paper pulp;
  • Replacement of plastic clamps with paper ones;
  • Elimination of plastic protective bags for cables and instructions;
  • Replacement of plastic transparent boxes for accessories with closed cardboard boxes;
  • Use of foldable rather than glued tabs / handles on outer packaging.

Moreover, Sony is going to test the production of recycled polypropylene boxes on European physical copies of PlayStation games this year

The company says it continues to explore ways to address the problem of plastic in its product packaging and seek alternatives to plastic in line with new global corporate guidelines for sustainable packaging design.
