Solid sub-flagship: Review of the vivo X50 smartphone

We continue to review the lines of popular smartphones. This time a camera phone from the company came to the editorial office for a test vivo – X50… The official price of the device in Russia is about 44,990 rubles

DELIVERY AND PACKAGING

We have received a retail sample of the device. The smartphone comes in a square box made of heavy cardboard, the lid of which shimmers beautifully in an X shape and has an embossed X50 logo with a glossy tint. Inside the buyers are waiting for a cardboard backing, in which the phone itself lies in a special recess on the left, packed in a technical film. The full name of the device flaunts in the center right – vivo X50.

Removing the cardboard box with the smartphone, you will find a compartment with accessories. This is a 33W vivo FlashCharge 2.0 power adapter, USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable, XE160 wired headphones with 3.5mm jack, 3.5mm to USB Type-C adapter, silicone case, eject clip SIM tray and manual. The protective film is already applied to the smartphone screen right at the factory.

EXTERNAL DATA AND CONNECTORS

In Russia, the smartphone is presented in two colors – sky blue and black mirror. For our test we got a sample in the color of sky-blue, which looks very nice and shimmers on the matte surface of the back of the device with light blue shades.

The back cover is made of glass, and the edges are made of chrome-plated metal, except for the top one, where a rounded piece of glass is inserted in the color of the back cover and also framed with chrome-plated metal. The smartphone looks very solid. The front side of the screen is covered with SCHOTT Xensation Up protective glass, which is a German alternative to the usual Gorilla Glass 3.

The size of the device is 159.5×75.4×7.5 mm. Weight – 173 grams. The screen is an AMOLED-matrix with a diagonal of 6.56 “and a resolution of Full HD + – 2376 × 1080 pixels. The screen refresh rate is 92 Hz (based on AIDA64 and AnTuTu tests). The pixel density is 397 ppi. The smartphone display covers approximately 87% of the front of the device.

In the upper left corner of the screen, a front-facing camera is embedded, which is designed not only for selfies and video calls, but also capable of unlocking the phone in the face. It works without delay, and even if you are wearing a medical mask. Above the display is the earpiece, which is used for its intended purpose. Above, under the screen, there is an illumination and proximity sensor, and in the lower part under the screen there is a fingerprint sensor, which quickly and clearly works when registered fingers touch.

On the back there is a rectangular oblong block of four camera modules and an LED flash, as well as a silver vivo logo. Due to the camera block, the phone is slightly raised and uneven on a hard surface, swinging like a swing if you press the upper left corner or the lower right. And even a silicone case does not greatly improve the situation, since it simply repeats the shape of the entire device and also sticks out in the camera area.

On the right side there is a power button and a volume rocker, as well as an antenna strip. On the left side there are no slots and buttons – there are only two antenna strips, and on the top there is an auxiliary microphone and two more antennas. The main holes are shown on the bottom edge. There you will find a tray for two nano-SIM cards, an earpiece microphone hole, a USB Type-C connector for charging and data transfer with OTG support, as well as a multimedia speaker hole and another antenna.

USE AND CONVENIENCE

The smartphone is light and thin. Thanks to the rounded metal edges, it fits perfectly in the hand and does not slip. The rear glass is also pleasant to the touch. The thumb reaches about 75% of the screen.

The display is bright, even small print can be seen in the sun. As with other AMOLED solutions, flickering is present at low brightness settings, but the situation improves when a special function is enabled in the settings. The matrix supports the output of HDR content. Navigating the smartphone is very enjoyable thanks to its 90Hz refresh rate. Watching video content on the road is a pleasure, and the embedded camera does not interfere at all, since it is outside the image. When reading manga and news on GameMAG.ru, there were no complaints either.

It is very convenient to type with your thumbs using the keyboard of the proprietary shell of the device, both with one hand and with two. Auto-rotate is triggered after about 1.5 seconds when the phone position is changed.

SOUND

The speaker on the bottom of the smartphone is responsible for playing multimedia content. The device supports Hi-Res Audio with a sampling rate of 192kHz at 24-bit. The sound is clear and loud, it is quite suitable for watching YouTube, and for movies and TV series. The smartphone also supports the AptX HD codec for those who like high-quality sound, but don’t like wires. The sound of music in the included headphones is awful, so you can forget about them almost immediately.

CAMERA AND PHOTO

The rectangular block on the back of the smartphone is equipped with four modules. The main camera has a resolution of 48 Mp (8000×6000) for photography and 8.3 Mp (3840×2160) for video. Focal length – 4.75 mm, aperture – f / 1.6. The second module is an 8-megapixel ultra-wide with an aperture of f / 2.2 and a coverage angle of 120 degrees. There is also a 13 megapixel portrait lens with f / 2.5 aperture, 2x optical and 20x digital zoom. The fourth 5MP module is designed for macro shooting with a focal length of 1.5 cm.

The main module does an excellent job in daylight outdoors and demonstrates good performance in terms of image detail, and in dim lighting, the photos, although they have noise, look quite good.

Night mode, on the other hand, does an excellent job and shows good details.

The ultra-wide module shoots well, but noise is clearly visible here even in daylight. Portrait mode is very good – the lens focuses perfectly on the subject. Super Macro mode is noisy, but overall it shoots well.

As for video, the main camera is capable of recording videos in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, as well as in 1080 / 720p at 30 and 60 frames. The camera uses gyro stabilization to reduce shake when shooting videos, and it performed well in tests.

The front-facing camera is cut into the upper left corner of the screen and meets with a special animation when you switch to it in the application. The front camera is equipped with a 32 megapixel module with an aperture of f / 2.5 and is capable of taking photos at a resolution of 6528 by 4896 pixels. Video this module can shoot in 1080p and 720p only at 30 frames per second.

BATTERY, IRON & COMMUNICATIONS

The smartphone comes with a non-removable large Li-Pol battery with a capacity of 4200 mAh. The phone supports 33W vivo FlashCharge 2.0 fast charging. This allows you to charge the vivo X50 50% in 29 minutes, up to 75% in 46 minutes and fully charged in an impressive 1 hour and 9 minutes. Unfortunately, this device does not have wireless charging technology. With active use, the smartphone lasts for 1 day.

vivo X50 runs on Android 10 operating system with vivo’s proprietary Funtouch OS 10.5 shell. The core of the system is last year’s 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset (8nm, 2 Kryo 470 Gold (Cortex-A76) cores with a frequency of 2.2 GHz and 6 Kryo 470 Silver (Cortex-A55) cores with an operating frequency of 1.8 GHz), which works in conjunction with the Adreno 618 graphics accelerator and 8 GB of RAM. The built-in memory in the device is 128 GB of UFS 2.1 standard, and this is the only modification available in Russia. There is no memory expansion slot in the device.

vivo X50 is equipped with Bluetooth version 5.1, NFC and Wi-Fi 5 with support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. Navigation systems: aGPS, GLONASS, GALILEO and BDS.

GAMES AND SYNTHETIC TESTS

We tested the smartphone in projects such as PUBG Mobile, Asphalt 9, Forza Street and World of Tanks Blitz. For several hours, no drawdowns were noticed. The games were smooth and comfortable to play. In normal operation, the processor temperature did not exceed 35 degrees, and the battery kept around 30.

When playing heavy projects such as PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9, the processor temperature reached 56 degrees, and the battery warmed up to 37. It also felt that the screen at the top of the smartphone was hotter than at the bottom.

In the basic AnTuTu and 3D Mark tests, the phone was identified as vivo 2004. In AnTuTu, it scores almost 279,238 points and takes 50th place in the ranking of Android solutions.

RESULTS

vivo X50 can be called a solid sub-flagship. Despite the fact that it does not have the most advanced hardware, it is enough not only for all everyday tasks, but also for games. Thanks to the pleasant design and high-quality materials, the smartphone looks solid, and a good set of cameras allows you to take pictures that will not be ashamed to post on social networks. However, for 45 thousand you can find better solutions for your own needs.
