SEAGATE IRONWOLF PRO 16TB Large Hard Drive Testing

At fairly regular intervals, we return to reviews of large hard drives, which are suitable for both office and home use. And this is not surprising, because the quality of the video is growing, the size of games can already exceed the values of several hundred gigabytes for a long time, and those who like to keep digitized versions of their favorite TV series and films at home need media for this.

Big and fast SSD not everyone will come to the rescue here, and the reason lies in the high cost of the format. therefore HDD are still very popular. At the same time, manufacturers use various recording technologies in their solutions – from shingled magnetic recording to HAMR and MAMR

Who came to us for the test IronWolf Pro 16TB (ST16000NE000) from company Seagate uses a traditional recording format, but at the same time significantly outperforms competitors in speed. The price of the product at the time of this writing was 42 130 rubles… The disc comes in a transparent plastic bag.

IronWolf Pro 16TB supports SATA-III interface and has 256MB of buffer memory. The spindle rotation speed is 7200 rpm. The disc itself is completely sealed and uses helium technology at its core with a recording density of nine platters using 18 heads.

According to the manufacturer, the disk’s workload limit is 330 TB / year. The claimed best continuous data transfer rate is 255 MB / s, but in a real test, 2 terabytes from another drive were copied at an average speed of 245 MB / s.

The IronWolf Pro line includes working models ranging from 10 TB to 18 TB in two terabyte increments.

Now let’s move on to real tests.

The HDD temperature is 32 degrees, which is 8 degrees lower than the other model from Seagate, which we tested earlier.

At the same time, the CrystalMark and AS SSD tests show figures that are much lower than the real work of the device.

So, CrystalMark shows a speed of 203 MB / s for reading and 199 MB / s for writing, respectively. During operation, this drive is very quiet – only 32 dB under load, so there are no characteristic clicks when loading data.

Installation and configuration is quite traditional for such devices. For use in conjunction with Windows IronWolf Pro must be formatted.

Surprisingly, the IronWolf Pro 16TB is inferior to our past 16TB SATA-III Seagate Exos X16 in speed, but surpasses it in cooling and quiet operation. Not to mention the 14 TB WD UltraStar, which I just took out of the case as a loser to these two monsters from Seagate.

To summarize, I would like to say that if you are looking for large-scale storage for your data, then the IronWolf Pro 16TB or 16TB SATA-III Seagate Exos X16 (which is 10 thousand rubles cheaper) will be the perfect choice.
