Runet celebrates its 26th anniversary, experts told how a pandemic influenced it

The Russian segment of the Internet today marks its 26th anniversary. On April 7, 1994, the .ru domain was officially registered in the world. In honor of the holiday, experts told what is happening in RuNet now and what is expected in the future.

In connection with the pandemic and mass self-isolation in the domestic IT industry, important changes have occurred. According to the Association of Electronic Communications, the volume of the Runet economy in 2019 grew by 20% compared to the previous year and amounted to 4.7 trillion rubles. The user audience grew to 96.9 million, and Internet penetration amounted to 78.1%.

“For 26 years, the Runet has experienced a lot, but what is happening now is a big challenge for the Internet industry,” says Sergey Plugotarenko, director of the RAEC. “We are pleased to note the increase in the number and quality of digital services aimed at normalizing the lives of those who are currently offline offline, who are deprived of their usual activities or offline communications.”

Director General of the Internet Development Institute Anton Klyuchkin, in turn, believes that the popularity of services related to trade will sharply increase, and does not exclude its temporary online departure.

The head of the Regional Public Center for Internet Technologies Sergey Grebennikov notes the advent of technology in everyday life – delivery services, taxis and more.

“An important trend will be an increase in the number of Internet users, primarily due to the older generation, who should stay at home today,” the expert believes.

CROC IT Director Andrei Ivanov expects the IT industry to strengthen in non-core areas, as well as the growth of cloud services, services for organizing remote work, for holding online meetings, conferences, webinars.

The pandemic and everything connected with it will in one way or another be shown to people who have not yet realized this, the importance of the Internet even for everyday life, Klyuchkin continues his reasoning.

“If earlier there were still those who were skeptical of this, in the new conditions everyone will have to introduce new approaches in their activities. The pandemic in general has shown how important people’s access to information, online services, and communications is, ”he summed up.
