PS5 is not being sold to buyers of several Switches: Japanese retailer decided to radically fight resellers

Major electronics store located in Tokyo’s Akihabara area Yodobashi Cameraregularly receiving from Sony Interactive Entertainment new deliveries Playstation 5 from the beginning of 2023, has introduced hard restrictions for users wishing to buy a console. The decisions were made in the framework of the fight against dealers.

As previously reported, most Japanese stores distribute hard-to-find items on a lottery basis – a buy-to-buy raffle is held, and winners get the opportunity to pay and get what they want. However, since the beginning of 2023, at some points of sale, the PlayStation 5 has been released simply on a first come, first served basis.

At the end of January, a brawl broke out in Yodobashi Camera among those who came for the next batch, which ended in disruption of sales and a call to the police… After examining the incident, the administration came to the conclusion that dealers were involved in the incident, and decided to “tighten the screws” to the maximum.

  • The store will not announce when the next batch of PlayStation 5 will start selling. Lucky ones will be lucky.
  • Only holders of Gold Point Card + registered cards can apply for the purchase of the PlayStation 5 (the user will be identified by the base to determine the history of his purchases in Yodobashi Camera).
  • If it is established that the user has already bought a PlayStation 5 in the past, another console will not be sold to him… Even if he bought the first one in November, and he wants to buy the second one now for his friends or relatives. Banners “We sell one PlayStation 5 per family” have already appeared in sales areas.
  • If the user is aggressive towards other visitors to the store, they will be denied the right to purchase the PlayStation 5.
  • If the internal system reveals that the user has purchased multiple Nintendo Switch consoles in the past, they will not be sold the PlayStation 5 either.… The fact is that Nintendo Switch was in a severe deficit in the Japanese market in 2017 and 2023, and ordinary people then suffered from second-hand dealers (queues at stores reached a record 3,000 people). Accordingly, the buyer of several Switches is immediately automatically considered as a potential speculator – such a person cannot be given the green light to pay for the PlayStation 5… No one will figure out who they bought the Switch to, since it is impossible to determine.
  • If a user mentions that he is buying a PlayStation 5 for resale, the store staff should refuse him.

The store administration understands that some players may find certain points discriminatory (it is not a crime to buy a second PlayStation 5 or a fifth Nintendo Switch), but they ask you to treat them with understanding in light of the excessive activity of dealers. This is a temporary measure. The rules do not apply to all retailers.
