Paper Plumber Rescue: Paper Mario Review: The Origami King for Nintendo Switch

One of the most important features of the series has always been humor, and in the new part it is amazing. You will constantly smile from what is happening on the screen. There are often humorous and compelling dialogs between the characters. Moments with characters not completely minimized to the state of origami will be ridiculed at all throughout the game. You will constantly find yourself in comic situations that, over and over again, are becoming more witty and original.

The game breaks the fourth wall between you and the characters, which only fuels interest in exploring the world further. I would like to know what else the developers have prepared.

It is a pity that the plot will be understandable only to those who know English, since the project has not been translated into Russian.

In games about Mario, history very often plays a secondary role, and gameplay mechanics and unique features come to the fore. However, in Paper Mario: The Origami King the plot is by no means for show. The scriptwriters prepared some very unexpected and original twists, where the classic at first glance story about saving the princess sparkled with new colors. Side characters, teammates, references to past games in the series and unexpectedly interesting moments – you need to see the game yourself.

The developers did not forget about the bosses who meet as they study the paper world. Some are attached to a certain natural element. The battles with them proceed according to another scenario, where the enemy and Mario change places (the boss – in the center of the arena, hits the outer rings). Mario moves in sectors from the outside of the circle to the center, but he cannot strike. On your turn, you must arrange actions so that Mario runs along the arrows to the center of the circle and stands on a special symbol for striking. This cycle of movements is repeated several times until the boss runs out of health.

As a result of such battles, Olivia gains the ability to transform into a boss, which will be required both in future battles and for solving puzzles.

As for the mini-bosses, they are made of papier-mâché, and battles with them take place in real time. You need to dodge their blows and deal damage with a hammer.

As I said earlier, the Paper Mario: The Origami King combat system is surrounded by a variety of add-ons during the game and is certainly original, but sometimes the complexity becomes too high. With long gaming sessions, you can get tired.

Sometimes the arrangement of enemies inside the circle sector resembles the assembly of spots or a rubik’s cube, only for a very limited time and number of actions. This may not appeal to everyone, especially if you like to play for 5 hours in a row. In this case, the enemies do a lot of damage and can kill the hero in one turn.

Graphics The Origami King is the standard of competent styling. Before us is one of the most beautiful and inventive in terms of game design in recent years. Attention to detail is constantly surprising. The whole world is made of paper, and all origami characters have beautiful folding animations.

Stylization is often played out plot. For example, characters get stuck between 2D and 3D dimensions, are afraid of water or fire, because they are paper – they can get wet or burn. One way to quickly move between locations is to fax, which makes you smile.

The game world is interactive and the interactions are creatively related to paper. It wrinkles, peels off, tears and explodes into small particles. It looks very beautiful.

There are both analogues of cardboard and foil, which nicely reflects light. As a result, all this is going to one big paper world, amazing the imagination with its originality and elaboration.
