New scandal on Twitch: the streaming platform decided to please women, but had to apologize

Streaming platform Twitch once again found herself at the epicenter of an Internet scandal. With good intentions and in an attempt to show respect for the female and gender-non-conforming part of the audience of the site, the administration of the resource angered everyone and fell under accusations of “transphobia“.

The scandal erupted from scratch. It all started with the fact that the team Twitch announced March “women’s month“by announcing the launch of a harmless initiative – every day for four weeks the main page of the site will be decorated with a window with broadcasts from streamer girls. Thus, the platform wants to motivate viewers to try themselves as content authors.

However, questions from the audience Twitch caused the wording used by the site managers. More precisely, the word “Womxn“which is an alternative and more gender-neutral spelling of the word”Woman“(“Female“).

A decent portion of viewers found the term derogatory and offensive in relation to the trans community… It was quickly explained to the streaming platform that by using the newly formed term to refer to trans women, the site deliberately differentiates them from cis women, which completely contradicts the ideas of inclusiveness, for which Twitch ostensibly trying to fight.

In turn, cis women considered the term “Womxn“strange and demanded to use the usual one.

Soon, the platform made an official apology. Team Twitch addressed the audience, and promised to abandon the term “Womxn“in favor of traditional spelling”Woman

“Originally using this word [“Womxn”], we wanted to clearly show the shortcomings of the gender-binary language. However, after hearing your feedback, hearing the reaction from the LGBTQIA + community, our team has decided that in the future we will stick to the traditional spelling of the word “women”.

We want to assure you that we are actively cooperating and will continue to listen to the feedback from the LGBTQIA + community. Now we are just learning. Good intentions do not always lead to positive results. But this does not mean that we refuse to take into account our experience and in the future we will stop developing in an attempt to create the most inclusive network space. ”

At the same time, the initiative with “women’s month“against the background of the scandal, no one has canceled – the idea will take place within the framework of the planned plan and schedule, which can be found here
