More games of scale Returnal: Housemarque spoke about the future prospects of the studio

Although Housemarque has been in the industry since the early 90s, her name was not widely known until the studio focused on small arcade projects for consoles after the release of Super Stardust HD in 2007. This went on for about ten years, until the developers finally admitted that such games did not bring enough profit.

A new milestone has begun for Housemarque with the release Returnal – the studio’s first AAA game in over twenty years of history.

While it remains to be seen how this project fared in terms of sales, in a recent interview with Gamereactor, the studio stated that is going to continue the release of projects similar in scale to Returnalwithout completely excluding the possibility of creating in the future the new smaller arcade shooters for which she is known.

“Yes, we used to work on two games at the same time, but now Returnal is, of course, our only project. It’s hard to say if we will continue to work on one or two projects, but the bottom line is that Returnal gave us the opportunity to declare ourselves and define with the type of future titles that we want to release. We want to show that we are not just “the studio that released Resogun.” We can do all kinds of things, which in our view means striving for larger forms of experience.

But we still love arcades and small games. Who knows, maybe in 26 years we will be making more of these games. It all depends on how successful we can become with the forms of experience that Returnal now has. “
