LEGO game developer questioned the need for a super-fast SSD PS5 to implement the ideas of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

John Burton, one of the founders of the company TT Games (former Traveler’s Tales), engaged in the development of games under license Lego, spoke about the action game that debuted this year Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart for console Playstation 5… In particular, the developer questioned the technical component of the game, allegedly impossible to implement without a super-fast SSD-drive of the new system from Sony

O Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Burton spoke up in a fresh video from his own YouTube channel Coding secrets… There, an industry veteran tried to analyze one of the key development features Insomniac Games – the ability to instantly move across locations through special portals and gaps in reality.

“How the Rift gameplay was demonstrated [Apart], now looks somewhat deceiving. A striking episode where Ratchet deftly jumps across many worlds at once in a single action segment, in fact, is a set of cutscenes, diluted with very small fragments of the gameplay “, – John Burton shared his thought.

Further, John Burton confidently suggested that a similar system of portals and fast switches can be implemented without any problems on old hardware – including Playstation 4 or even Playstation 3

“Pocket dimensions are visually very simple, and they use a lot of standard assets like boxes and containers that are already available in the system memory. In fact, they are skyboxes, several small platforms, a set of assets and beautifully set lighting. on old hardware, this would not take too much memory, especially taking into account the mentioned assets. Everything would be loaded very quickly, “the developer elaborated.

Then Burton walked through another section of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, namely the moment where the main character slides on magnetic boots through special rails, moving through the worlds. This visual trick of the developer was also not very impressive.

“It’s important to understand that this is not an optional episode, you should definitely participate in it. This is a key moment, because the section with the rails is loaded at the moment you ride the speeder. You are moving in a very limited piece of the game world, and you cannot even move freely, and therefore the game has all the time it needs to load the next section, “Burton continued.

The specialist stressed that he does not accuse the Insomniac Games team of lying. He admits that all Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart design decisions were indeed defined and implemented taking into account the bandwidth of the PlayStation 5 SSD. However, according to his own views, with enough ingenuity and imagination, such ideas can be implemented on classic HDDs. …

Recall that earlier representatives of Insomniac Games questioned the possibility of launching Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PlayStation 4. Developers believe that too many compromises would have to be made for consistent performance on older hardware.
