“It was hard to please everyone”: BioWare veterans share memories of the scandalous ending of Mass Effect 3

Edition The gamer talked to several former and current studio staff BioWare and asked their opinion on the reaction to the ending Mass effect 3, in 2012 which had a bombshell effect on the fan community.

Over the past few weeks, a journalist Sian Maher systematically interviewed people involved in one way or another in the creation of the trilogy Mass effect, in order to find out how exactly the scandalous ending was created and how the developers themselves treated it. The answers were very diverse. Someone agreed with the players’ disappointment with the ending of the captain’s story Shepardwhile others defended the closing scenes.

For example, Jay Turner, one of the writers for Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, anticipated that the trilogy’s ending might turn out to be uneven. At the same time, his attitude towards the ending changed somewhat over time.

“It’s easy to say that I knew right away that the ending would turn out to be sucks. But I really had fears. When all the script points were finally agreed upon, I already moved to work in another EA studio, but continued to communicate with my friend [из BioWare] – it was wrong.

When I got to the game myself, the ending did not upset me, I perceived everything as if the whole Mass Effect 3 was the big ending of the trilogy. But when I sat down to replay the third part and realized that all my decisions influenced only the color of the blast wave in the last video, I was very upset. ”

And if you believe the words Patrick Moran, the gameplay designer for Mass Effect 3, at the time of production, many developers had serious concerns about the end of the project. Some of them even called for rewriting the ending.

“A significant part of the then Mass Effect team protested against the ending. I read parts of the script and got angry that the decisions I made ultimately did not make any sense. I even sent emails with suggestions to fix the situation, but no one answered me. Then the studio worked like a warship – everywhere there was a clear hierarchy, everyone was responsible only for their own work, and the leaders were waiting for the opportunity to get a promotion for years. We followed orders and tried not to make noise. But the authors of Dragon Age in those years were more rebellious , like pirates of the free seas. “

In turn, the screenwriter Chris Hepler I am convinced that in the context of the given narrative, the ending of Mass Effect 3 was effective, fulfilling its role. The case was greatly helped by the addition of The Extended Cut, the developer said.

“The ending is about space magic. The senior writer, gameplay designer and producer settled on this decision and did not back down from it later. The main thing was to find a sufficiently suitable technological justification. They needed to create some kind of global dilemma that would affect the life of the entire galaxy. If you think about it, , then in the ending there is no objectively correct choice. The option with destruction does not solve the crisis between AI and organic life. The option with control to some extent justifies the Reapers. Even the option with synthesis, which is the most difficult to unlock and which looks like an ideal scenario for world peace, in fact, leads to a violent rewriting of the genetic code of all living things. In this sense, I think the scenario works.

Are the fans satisfied? At first, no. And a lot of criticism is quite justified. The Extended Cut allowed us to take a second look at the ending, take player choices into account, and make as many edits as the scenario framework would allow us to. I began to look completely differently both at my work and at the work of the team after the release of EX “, – says Chris Hepler.

Summing Up Former Co-workers, Mass Effect 3 Senior Writer Neil Pollner noted that, in his opinion, to complete such a large-scale work of art so as not to leave anyone disappointed is an almost impossible task.

“When the player gets acquainted with three huge games full of complex decisions that determine the development of the plot, the universe, the characters, the very idea of the final ending, which will put an end to the epic journey, cannot find the ideal realization. time grew in size and branched out in different directions. Giving the opportunity to make decisions as the game progresses, any ending that lacks an unthinkable number of variables is sure to disappoint someone, “concluded Neil Pollner.

Today BioWare is actively involved in returning to the Mass Effect universe.
