“I want to finish the second book, hang out with my daughter and return with renewed vigor”: Jason Schreyer leaves Kotaku

News editor Jason schreier after eight years of work leaves Kotaku. About it he reported in your own Twitter account and using a special farewell note on the portal.

He takes a few weeks off to finish his second book (“Blood, sweat and pixels 2“),” hang out “with his seven-month-old daughter, and then return to us with new strength and insiders, but at a different place of work. What kind of project in question is still unknown. Schreyer’s last working day at Kotaku is Friday, April 17th.

After leaving Kotaku, an investigative journalist will continue to release podcasts along with his colleagues Kirk Hamilton and Maddy Myers, but it will not be Kotaku Splitscreen, but rather its analogue. New Podcast Named Triple click, and its broadcasting will be organized on the network Maximum fun.

Jason did not begin to talk about the reasons for leaving, only expressing disappointment in the current management of the publication – the company G / o media:

“When I think about what happened with Deadspin, bile accumulates in my throat. After October 29, 2019, it became clear to me that I could no longer work for this company.”

Schreier noted that previous iterations of Kotaku owners offered their employees an unprecedented level of editorial freedom, and he is grateful to them for this opportunity to learn, make mistakes and write a lot of stupid articles.

Top Jason Schreyer favorite memories from his last 8 years at Kotaku:

  • Review of IGN’s exclusive BioShock Infinite review
  • Writing News Headlines
  • Video Game Rating Rating
  • Memorial service for Luigi
  • An article on how Activision publishes avoid revealing Destiny’s current sales
  • 24 Hour Hot News
  • And other nonsense, like a note about 30 games that Schreyer would like to see on SNES Classic

According to Jason, he always liked that Kotaku was never afraid to be both serious and stupid. He is glad that his last two notes on the portal are: Rockstar change report after public pressure and news about Outer Wilds screenwriter joining The Outer Worlds developers camp.

Schreyer noted that in his eight-plus years at Kotaku he has never been told to write anything just because advertisers may break off relations with the resource or it will somehow anger the company that creates video games, or because of fear to upset the wrong people. In the first place has always been the story and readers of the resource.

Jason thanked his colleagues and wished them good luck in their future work. Separate recognition was given to those sources that communicated with him over the past eight years. Some did it privately and revealed rather serious things, such as unbearable working conditions in the workplace. Others did it on record. In his opinion, without them his work, consisting in informing and entertaining people, would be simply impossible.

One of Schreier’s last serious work was an investigation into the Naughty Dog’s inner kitchen and the development of The Last of Us: Part II.
