Greetings from the past: Playable version of Dinosaur Planet – canceled Rare project for Nintendo 64 leaked online

During the development process, games can change shape, and sometimes images of earlier versions suddenly surface out after years. FROM Dinosaur planet just such a case happened.

Dinosaur Planet was planned to be a swan song Rare for N64The project was supposed to include vast outdoor locations and voice acting elements, fit on a 64MB cartridge – the largest a console could have… However, development of the game dragged on, and Nintendo eventually gave developers the go-ahead to move from the N64 to the then-new GameCube.

Along with the move to more powerful hardware, the game was transformed into a part of the Star Fox franchise, eventually becoming the famous Star fox adventures… This is partly influenced by both the transfer and the similarities between the anthropomorphic character designs from Dinosaur Planet and Fox McCloud from Star Fox. Due to the change of platforms and primarily the IP itself, the original idea of Dinosaur Planet could only be seen through ancient videos, magazine articles and eyewitness accounts, but recently everything has changed.

The leaked assembly in question is appeared on the network thanks to the archivists from the group Forest of illusiondedicated to the preservation of the Nintendo heritage… The Dinosaur Planet disc was originally in the hands of a private Swedish game collector, but was bought out by them and posted in the public domain. This is a version dated December 1, 2000, that is, already one of the later builds, but the game is still far from final, so there are some problems with performance.

“At the moment, the game will not run perfectly on any emulator. Expect a lot of graphical issues with shadows and lighting, and some lags. However, the game should work just fine with flash cards.”
