Gabe Newell named the main superpower of PC

Gabe Newell believes that the openness of the PC platform is one of its most important and defining qualities. The head of the company with the corresponding thoughts Valve shared in a conversation with the resource IGN as part of an interview about a portable gaming system Steam Deck

My understanding is that the openness of the PC ecosystem is a superpower that works for our common good.… Want to install the Epic Games Store – please want to turn on the Oculus Quest – great. These are all part of the available options. This is the approach that interests me as a gamer, “explained Gabe Newell.

The Valve chief also compared PCs with “closed” console platforms from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, saying that their approach was not very appealing to him.

“I don’t want to hear about some Trojan horse that will bind me hand and foot. I want to know about my options. If there is any hardware, I connect to it. There is some software, I install it. and I do. And that’s great, “continued Gabe Newell.

In terms of the Steam Deck design philosophy, the Valve chief named two defining benchmarks – the openness of the platform, and the availability and attractiveness of the device for the current hardcore PC audience.

“Fundamental is the excellent performance of your entire Steam library. This is a critical point that needs to be combined with overall openness. It should work out so that as an active PC gamer, I could take this console. [Steam Deck] and immediately understand – it works, and it works quickly, “added Gabe Newell.

Recall that the launch of the Steam Deck in a number of selected countries should take place in December this year.
