“Don’t Blame Our Staff”: CD Projekt RED Releases Message to Players and Apologizes for Cyberpunk 2077

Co-founder of the company CD Projekt Marcin Ivinsky recorded a video in which he apologized to the players for the state of the console versions Cyberpunk 2077 and explained what was happening in the studio CD Projekt RED before release. He asked the audience not to write angry messages to ordinary studio employees who love their job, confirming that the decision to release the long-term construction on December 10, 2023 was not made by them, but directly by the managers.

We strive to make the best games in the world. This became our goal, and it still drives us.… Keeping in mind our principles of open and honest dialogue, you believed us and pre-ordered our game. But despite the good ratings for the PC version, the console versions of Cyberpunk 2077 did not reach the quality bar we were aiming for. I and the entire management of the company deeply regret what happened, and in this video I publicly admit our mistakes Please don’t blame our employees for them. Each of them is incredibly talented and dedicated to their work.at. The final decisions are made by me and the board of directors, and we decided to release the game. However, believe me, we did not expect that what happened… We will do our best to regain your trust, “Ivinsky said.

Explaining what had happened, Ivinsky recalled that Cyberpunk 2077 is a huge game with many complex mechanics and a vibrant city. It took an incredible amount of effort to create it, but the studio made it even more difficult when it decided that Cyberpunk 2077 should look its best on PC – the most advanced platform on the market when the game debuted.

“The plan was to then fit it to the consoles, including the previous generation. We started from that, and in the beginning it didn’t look too complicated. We knew about the difference in performance, yes, but time has shown that everything turned out to be more complicated than we thought“.

One of the main challenges has been the need to continually improve the in-game streaming system on legacy consoles, Ivinsky said.

“Streaming” is needed to “feed” the engine what you see on the screen, as well as elements of game mechanics. Since the city is full of details, and the bandwidth of the discs of old consoles is not the best, it constantly slowed us down. Every change and improvement required verification, and as it turned out, during testing, many of the problems that you encountered in the game were not found“.

Ivinsky claims that as the release date approached, the team showed significant progress and believed she would achieve the desired quality with a zero-day update… Since work on the console version continued until the very last moment, the PC version was sent to journalists for consideration. It happened in early December and they gave Cyberpunk 2077 a high rating.

We fought to the last for the quality of the console versions, and each additional day of work on the zero-day update brought visible improvements.… So we started sending out console keys for reviews on December 8th. All this happened while we were working from home due to the restrictions associated with the coronavirus. That hit us too. “

CD Projekt RED prides itself on the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077, but admits it wasn’t perfect either. Therefore, now not only the console versions are improving, but also the computer. Three urgent hotfixes have already fixed some issues, but this is just the beginning.

The first major update will be released within 10 days, and another, more significant, will follow in the coming weeks. Small patches will also be released.

In parallel, CD Projekt RED is developing Cyberpunk 2077 in terms of content and expansion of the universe. Long-term support plans have not changed, but the release dates for the free DLCs were slightly shifted so that the studio can focus on improving the technical part… They will be announced over the next months.

Cyberpunk 2077’s full nextgen upgrade will be released in the second half of 2023 – Owners of versions for PS4 and Xbox One will be able to update for free.

Finally, Ivinsky assured that the studio is very serious about what happened and is doing its best to restore the trust of the audience and partners. CD Projekt RED is in constant contact with Sony and is working on the return of Cyberpunk 2077 to the PS Store.
