“Combining the terrible and the beautiful”: Silent Hill’s retired father from Sony talks about the development of a new horror

Creator Siren, Gravity rush and Silent Hill Keiichiro Toyama, who announced the opening of his own studio at the beginning of the year Bokeh game studio, gave an interview to the publication Eurogamer, in which he said that his decision to leave Sony Interactive Entertainment was not sudden.

According to the developer, he began to think about independence a few years ago, namely after the game director The Last Guardian Fumito Ueda, another veteran Sony, left the company and focused on the development of his separate team

When Toyama and his colleagues, who eventually founded Bokeh Game Studio with him, learned about the upcoming reorganization into SIE Japan Studio, as a result of which the studio actually had to cease to exist, they decided to act and said goodbye to Sony.

Today Bokeh Game Studio is developing multi-platform horror, which we already heard about… Toyama’s close colleagues also began their careers in the horror genre. Together they now hope to interest Silent Hill and Siren fans in their new project.

Silent Hill’s father admitted that he had long wanted to return to horror, and the work on the Gravity Rush franchise helped him “take a break” and “stock up on ideas.”

Since the beginning of 2023, the studio has been working on a prototype that still needs improvements, but it is already beginning to form into something unique, which Toyama has not seen on the market.… Based on the game designer’s description, there is a place for dynamic elements and action in the game.

So far, Toyama is the only screenwriter for the new horror, but it is possible that in the future he will invite a second screenwriter or narrative designer to work.

We do not write a simple and branched story, which is often found in modern games.“- explained the creator of Silent Hill.

Toyama’s team strives to create a “project with a new approach to storytelling,” weaving story and gameplay together. This is the aspect of the upcoming Bokeh Game Studio that gets the most attention.

“We are moving towards something ‘terrible’, but at the same time ‘aesthetically beautiful.’ The fusion of these two aspects is our goal.”

Last year, insiders insisted that the Silent Hill reboot was being created exclusively for the PlayStation 5 in the bowels of Sony Japan Studio under Toyama. As a result, SIE Japan Studio no longer exists, Toyama does not work for Sony, and there was no announcement of an exclusive Silent Hill either.

Eurogamer asked Toyama to comment on the situation, to which he replied as follows:

To be honest, I am not in a position to comment on such things. But if you are interested in my personal opinion, then, considering the release of P.T. a few years ago, it can be said that there is no need to adhere to a particular approach or style. As long as the central ideas of Silent Hill, based on the inner darkness of people, persist, a variety of ideas can be implemented.“.
