Chris Avellone responded to accusations of harassment – Igromania

A year ago, after IGN published an interview with legendary screenwriter Chris Avellon, accusations of sexual aggression, harassment, misbehavior and almost pedophilia against the creator appeared on Twitter. And now Avellone himself decided on them reply
According to him, it all started in 2012, in Atlanta, at an event Dragon con – or rather, outside, in a bar. A girl named Karissa was neither an employee nor a subordinate of Avellone, she did not even work in the gaming industry and did not know who he was. She came over because he put drinks for everyone.

At the end of the get-together, Avellone and two other writers went to escort Karissa to her room. In front of the door, Chris tried to kiss her, she answered and for a while they kissed. They did not enter the room, because a neighbor was sleeping there, and soon they just went their separate ways.

After this innocent incident, Chris and Karissa continued to communicate, correspond and have fun. But they kissed only once when he accompanied her to the train.

Shortly after the start of the scandal, Karissa deleted about 60,000 of her tweets. But nothing ever disappears from the Internet

A year later, Chris and Karissa met again at the same convention. This time with Karissa was Jackie’s friend, and the girl invited him to hit on her. Jackie eagerly responded, they spent the night together and continued to see each other and correspond. They remained friends with Karissa, met at various events, and Avellone helped her with employment.

Over time, the relationship with Jackie came to a standstill: she lived far from Chris, he had little time, he did not plan to move on to something serious, although she obviously saw everything in a different light – and shared her vision with her friends. Accordingly, Karissa’s attitude began to deteriorate: she began to show hostility, and in September 2014 Avellone decided to stop communicating with her.

In June 2023, eight years after the fateful bar meeting, Karissa tweeted a long list of the writer’s sins. After that, Avellone became persona non grata in the gaming industry: one after another, the studios announced the termination of relations with him, and all his developments were sent to the trash heap.
Avellone noted that Friday evening was not accidentally chosen as the time of the attack. The companies did not have time to figure everything out, and some were not going to use it. Meanwhile, discussions spread across social media all weekend. And on Monday morning, studios like Techland and Gato salvaje rushed to announce the termination of contracts.

It may surprise you that I didn’t fight all of this. But this is unreal. And companies, too, cannot fight the cancellation culture, or they themselves will be canceled. Companies cannot even say they want to think through their decision without indicating that they believe all the charges, no matter how unfounded they may be: even a hint of delay or a desire to know the details will be convicted and canceled. Nobody wants to be canceled, even if it means turning your back on someone you’ve worked with for years.

Chris Avellone

The screenwriter admits that he did not want to make excuses and express his point of view immediately, in hot pursuit. He wanted to allow all the girls who were not happy with him to be heard, because he understood how the culture of cancellation works.

For the same reasons, he did not blame any studio that crossed out his work, although it hurt him to read about it – especially the statement of Gato Salvaje, with whom he worked on The waylanders and which was the initiator of that very ill-fated interview with IGN.

I must point out that some members of the press did not even contact me before starting to paint their own gloomy interpretation of events, and even embellish it. The gaming press does not need to check the “facts” at all: all it needs to do is report that someone has said something, or make assumptions, and the material is ready.

However, as soon as the press “reports” something like that, it turns into the same confirmation as the results of the investigation, supported by facts – and as far as I know, no one conducted it. The journalists either didn’t have time, or they didn’t care what the truth turned out to be. So everything they wrote is technically true – someone said something. But this is incredibly far from what actually happened.

Chris Avellone

Avellone admitted that he did not listen to friends who advised not to apologize to anyone, because he felt guilty towards Jackie because of their breakup. But he admitted them right when his apology to Jackie was instantly interpreted as an admission that Karissa was right.

He also did not resort to legal means to clarify the situation, as he believed that the legal system was silent. Avellone, on the other hand, wanted Karissa, Kelly and the other accusers to tell more and more, and then he would answer. But practice has shown that no one is going to listen to him.

A year later, Chris admitted that he was wrong: the attacks on him were not delusion or misunderstanding, it was a deliberately hostile act. And now he is ready to defend himself.

In two years of acquaintance with Avellon, Karissa has not had a single case of harassment. Everything turned out to be different in 2023
